Dr John Hennessy's post graduate training began in Melbourne in 1974 and he held appointments in Melbourne at Royal Melbourne Hospital, Prince Henry's Hospital, Preston and Northcote Community Hospital, Western General Hospital, The Royal Dental Hospital and The Peter McCallum Clinic.

Dr John Hennessy has practised the specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in North Eastern Victoria and the Riverina, holding appointments at Albury Base Hospital, Albury Wodonga Private Hospital, Wodonga District Hospital, The Mercy Hospital (Albury), Wangaratta Private Hospital, Wangaratta District Base Hospital, Wagga Wagga Base Hospital, Calvary Hospital (Wagga Wagga), Griffith Base Hospital and Narrandera District Hospital.

Dr Hennessy has had a special interest in the management of facial trauma and the surgical correction of facial deformities. In 1982 the Albury Facial Deformity Clinic was established and this clinic now sees (in conjunction with other specialists) in excess of fifty patients a year primarily offering advice and surgical management for congenital facial abnormalities, but also providing similar services for a range of post traumatic deformities.

He is an inaugural member of the Head and Neck Clinic at the Murray Valley Private Hospital, Wodonga. This clinic was established for the management of cancer patients and is staffed by four specialists, Peter Hughes (Radiation Oncologist), Craig Underhill (Medical Oncologist), Gerard Fogarty (Ear, Nose and Throat Surgeon) and John Hennessy (Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon). Patients are able to be treated at Murray Valley Private Hospital for their radiation and chemotherapy needs, with Albury Base Hospital as a centre of excellence in the management of cancer from the surgical point of view.
